LaunchPad

LaunchPad is a City of Vancouver program which supports recent graduates of Fine Arts programs. InFlux was selected to be featured on a city-owned billboard along the Arbutus Greenway. InFlux refers to a sudden and substantial increase. That increase occurs digitally each time I lay down on top of my flatbed scanner and a new file emerges into my archive.  InFlux are a selected pair of scans of thousands, hand selected from the digital debris hidden within my pink laptop. These scanner-based images are works which exist as a by-product of durational gestures enacted alone in my studio, in active practice of tenderness with technology.  The body becomes fractured, smeared, multiplied. This fragmentation of the self offers me the opportunity to shapeshift and code switch,​​ walking the fine line between visibility and invisibility,​​ to fit in with clarity where necessary, ​or glitch backward into a blurry oblivion when I need to hide. The autonomy the scanner offers me to pursue multiplicity, bifurcation and illegibility offers modes of survival for my brown, queer, girl body. This distorted legibility,​​ and lack of readability applied onto my flesh through the means of the machine's only task coupled with my physical intervention continues this active pushing from the centre within hetero-white capitalist patriarchy. This work evaluates the functions of gaze, stillness, pose and reduction, and in turn aims to trouble the market viability of racialized, feminized flesh.
